DBT for Drug and Alcohol Addiction

with Laura Petracek, Ph.D.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is a short-term and research-based therapeutic model that focuses on helping people to manage emotions that may be intense and painful. Often, alcohol may be used as a method of coping or self-medicating difficult emotions, such as anxiety or depression. DBT can help a person learn how to cope with these emotions and provide tools for managing them. It can also help clients to work through potential triggers and curb self-destructive and maladaptive behaviors. Combining the application of DBT and the Twelve Steps allows individuals to address the underlying issues of addiction and manage daily stressors. Applying DBT for alcohol and drug addiction helps build relationships to delve into and maintain a healthy state of mind while painting the daily commitment to stay clean and sober. DBT and AA/NA emphasize abstinence and focus on behavior change, developing sober interests, and identifying and changing dysfunctional thoughts and behavior.

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:
Discuss the principles and applications of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) in treating alcohol and drug addiction.
Demonstrate the ability to teach my clients how to manage intense emotions, curb self-destructive behaviors, and promote relapse prevention in     individuals struggling with addiction.
Discuss the integration of DBT and the Twelve Steps in treating addiction and emphasize the importance of addressing a client’s underlying issues and teaching them skills to maintain a healthy state of mind.
Assess the role of relationships in recovery.
