Integrating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

with W. Keith Sutton, Psy.D.

There is no question today that Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an important tool in a clinician's toolbox. Significant empirical research has demonstrated its effectiveness with issues such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, phobias, panic disorder, OCD, ADHD, social phobia, and other issues. The Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy views CBT as a general theory influenced by Aaron Beck's Cognitive Therapy (CT), Behavioral Theory, and Ellis' Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT). This general theory provides a structure for a number of interventions culled from a variety of theoretical sources to improve treatment effectiveness. These sources include Dialectic Behavioral Therapy, Schema Therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, Exposure with Response Prevention, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing, Narrative Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and others.

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:
Describe the theoretical grounding in CBT, which is the ABC model.
Create a collaborative relationship with clients as informed by the “therapist’s stance”.
Use the BEAST acronym to both assess and treatment plan.
Demonstrate to clients how CBT works through experimental exercises.
Use interoceptive exposure with clients in session.
Create a treatment plan for addressing various psychological issues with CBT.
Describe three (3) play therapy interventions and describe how they can be used to help children express feelings and learn coping strategies.
